


Augusta County was established in 1738 from Orange County, and is named for Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, Princess of Wales from 1736 - 1751. Augusta County once extended to the Mississippi River and beyond, but today covers an area of 970 square miles, and has a population of approximately 66,000 people.
The City of Staunton (pronounced "Stan-ton") was established in 1747, and is the county seat for Augusta County. Staunton has a population of approximately 23,900 people.
